As children grow up, families struggle to find ways to retain meaningful connection due to time, distance, and communication constraints. Familial relationships are at stake and could worsen as a result. How might we facilitate asynchronous connection to lessen impacts of long distance relations?

PROBLEM

Created an intuitive mobile app in Famjam, helping families stay connected by sharing daily moments, creating memory-rich journals, strengthening familial bonds with playful reactions, and turning everyday updates into cherished keepsakes.

RESEARCH SUMMARY

Understanding Student Struggles with Job Applying

Unpacking User Experiences

Through Interviews

We conducted user interviews with pre-developed questions, aiming to uncover insights into their concerns when browsing through jobs to apply for.

Clear Job Understanding: Users need help clearly grasping job description requirements.

Timely & Inaccurate: Users find job postings long, inaccurate, and tedious to read.

Pain Points

Opportunities

Concerns

Skills-Based Matching: Users seek roles that better align with their skills and goals.

Overwhelming Qualifications: Users feel burdened by excessive # of qualifications.

Long Wait Times: Waiting for application updates create uncertainty and self-doubt.

Taking the data we collected, we created a user persona to help us understand and empathize the goals, concerns, and motivations with our target audience.

Our Very Own Job-Seeker: Timothy

Worried about not finding the right job for his skill set.

Overwhelmed by the amount of information he faces throughout job applying.

"I want to understand what role matches best with my preferences, skill set, and goals before I begin working."

Brain Dump: 10 Minutes to Generate A Plethora of Ideas

While brainstorming, we generated multiple ideas in 10 minutes, evaluating each against our pain points. Each idea was evaluated against our established criteria, focusing on how effectively it addressed the pain points we had identified. After careful consideration, we selected the idea that best aligned with the goals of the project and had the potential to deliver the most impactful solution.

Since this was my first designathon, I was anxious about putting my knowledge to the test. At first, I was overwhelmed by the amount of work that we had to do in the next 48 hours, but my partner kept reassuring me that we should take it one step at a time. Before I knew it, the weekend flew by and I’m proud to have won 1st place.

While we had flushed out this amazing idea called CareerConnect, upon doing research after the designathon, we realized that current solutions were very similar. You could say that great minds think alike! But we knew that had to come up with a competitive edge to make our solution different and unique while still remaining true to the users’ needs.

FamJam — building bonds beyond distance

Designing an app to promote long-distance family bonding

In Winter 2024, I participated in UX Laurier's annual Design-a-thon with a group of friends. Our challenge was to develop a solution to use elements of everyday life to promote bonding and relationship-building. We narrowed this down to making the most out of asynchronous connection to overcome the lack of existing familial bonds.
